April is usually the month of Easter and daffodils but both have been early this year! One thing that will be regular as clockwork is the arrival of our summer migrants – a sure sign the seasons are changing.
Some are more familiar such as house martins, swifts and swallows but some of the more unusual ones are most welcome too - look out for spotted flycatcher, golden oriole and a variety of warblers.
Listen too for nightingale and cuckoo, sadly declining in numbers so a real treat when they are heard.
British Summer Time has begun so lets hope the weather measures up as the breeding period will be underway for our wildlife. Many will be at their busiest time of year and there will be tremendous activity with feeding and nurturing young.
One of nature's best pest controllers will be emerging from their slumber about now – the master muncher, the hedgehog, is a true friend to gardeners.
Emerging from hibernation they will be very hungry indeed so put out some cat and dog food and water if you can. Remember, cow's milk and bread is not good for hedgehogs as it doesn't really have any nutritional value and can swell up in their stomachs.
Whilsttalking about a variety of wildlife we can't miss out the bee. Not everyone likes these busy insects but almost all else in the garden depends on them!
There has been talk of its plight recently and I can't stress how important it is to help conserve it – please try not to mow too short and tolerate a few wild plants like clover in your lawn. The pink and white flowers are a real favourite of bees and they will reward you by pollinating your plants and fruit trees.
Enjoy the longer days and wield your secateurs with caution as nests have a habit of turning up in bizarre places and expectant mothers will be most put out!
