Church is in a picturesque setting

editorial image

St Mary’s Church in Greasley is in a very picturesque setting, surrounded by beautiful countryside.

The church was a favourite haunt for DH Lawrence, and he portrayed it as ‘Willey Green Church’ in his popular novel, Women in Love.

Rodolph (Baron) Von Hube, the author of A History of Greasley, was rector here from 1866 to 1907.

This was a postcard from the ‘Rex’ series, and was posted from Giltbrook to St Helens in 1922.

The picture was taken from the book Eastwood: On old picture postcards by David Ottewell.
