Builders were urged to start providing homes in Amber Valley - instead of sitting on undeveloped land.

The plea came at a meeting of the borough council’s Planning Board, which approved a housing estate on a former transport depot on Meadow Lane, Alfreton.

Cllr John Walker, who outlined traffic concerns, pointed out that a 63-home scheme was approved for the land seven years ago but was never started. He said: “It seems another case of land banking.”

Cllr David Taylor told the board: “We often give permission to build and nothing ever happens.”

He was backed by cllr Brian Lyttle, who said:”I am just amazed seven years down the line nothing has happened. I am just disappointed.” He said the board had given approval for 3,000 new homes across the borough in the last six years but these had not been built.

The Meadow Lane scheme could provide around 50 homes, members were told. If the land is developed, education chiefs say the owners should hand over £79,000 to boost schooling in the area. Developers would also be asked to provide cash for play areas. And the estate would need to help meet a shortage for accommodation offering two and three bedrooms.
