Church ladies visit Moorgreen Pit

editorial image

Mothers Union ladies from Hilltop Catholic Church in 1967 paid a visit to the pit in this picture.

The group had been on a trip to Moorgreen Pit. As their hard hats show, they had been down the colliery and to the coal face. In the photo is Stanley and Josie Winfield. Stanley and his son Tony both worked down the pit. Tony’s wife Gillian submitted this picture, along with several others that we have printed over the last few weeks on the Memory Lane pages. Stanley got leukaemia and left the job to be a caretakeer at Eastwood Comprehensive School. Tony worked at Moorgreen pit for 15 years, until he was made redundant when it closed.
