Films have got the Wright stuff

DERBY arts centre Quad will be screening a short season of films as part of the city’s Wright Of Derby Festival, which celebrates the Derby-born artist Joseph Wright.

Painting With Light explores how filmmakers have used the Chiaroscuro lighting effect pioneered by Joseph Wright, It includes Stanley Kubrick’s brilliant Barry Lyndon, accompanied by rare screenings of two classics, M and The Third Man.

Barry Lyndon, from 1975, is Stanley Kubrick’s epic costume drama based on William Makepeace Thackeray’s beautiful novel. It can be seen on Thursday, February 23, at 8.40pm, the screening will be introduced by Total Film journalist Simon Kinnear.

Fritz Lang’s M (PG) from 1931, screens on March 7-8. The Third Man is blessed with great performances, a rich atmosphere and wonderful direction. It screens on March 25 and 26.
