Help raise money for water in Nepal

editorial image

International charity, WaterAid, is calling on climbers and walkers of all levels to conquer (or re-conquer) their favourite local mountain and raise vital funds to provide access to clean water and sanitation to rural communities in Nepal.
Join over 2,000 other walkers taking part in the 2013 WaterAid200 challenge on June 8 and take on your chosen mountain to raise money for the charity. The challenge aims to put a different team on top of 200 different mountains in the UK and Ireland while raising over £200,000 to help fund work to improve access to safe water and sanitation in Nepal.
The 200 peaks in the challenge have been selected by WaterAid supporters and include many in the Peak District close to Belper. Teams can enjoy the stunning views from the summit of popular Mam Tor or take on the might Kinder Scout, the highest point in the Peaks.
Visit www.wateraid200.org to find out more about the challenge, sign-up and claim your favourite peak.
WaterAid is an international non-governmental organization. Its mission is to transform lives by improving access to safe water, hygiene and sanitation in the world’s poorest communities. www.wateraid.org.

Calling all young
writers

Award-winning children’s author, Gill Lewis, has teamed up with veterinary charity PDSA to launch its annual competition for young writers.
The PDSA Writing Competition is open to budding authors under 18-years-old. Entries should be between 500-2,000 words long.
To get the creative juices flowing, Gill has provided the beginning of a story exclusively for PDSA. It goes:
‘If Jem and I hadn’t missed the school bus, we’d never have found it. If we hadn’t taken the short cut across the park, we wouldn’t have seen it at all. But we did see it, or at least we heard it at first. It was making a terrible noise and thrashing about in the thick undergrowth.
I edged closer and pulled away the brambles. It was lying there, caked in mud, its big eyes staring back at us. I knew we couldn’t leave it. We had to do something.’
Just tell PDSA what you think happens next by sending your story to the PDSA Writing Competition, PDSA, Whitechapel Way, Priorslee, Telford, TF2 9PQ or emailto competitions@pdsa.org.uk. The closing date for entries is May 31, 2013.
The competition winner will get to meet Gill at a special VIP behind-the-scenes tour of Bristol PDSA PetAid hospital, as well receiving a fantastic selection of her books. Two runners-up will receive a signed copy of Moon Bear and a PDSA Pet Protectors goodie bag.

Monte Carlo or bust!

The 2013 Monte Carlo or Bust Banger Rally is now open for entries and organisers are hopeful of finding teams from the Eastwood and Kimberley area to burn rubber for over 1,000 miles to Monte Carlo via France, Switzerland and Italy. The rally challenges entrants to source a banger car for less than £250 and take part in a variety of Top Gear-style challenges along the way and compete for points and prizes. Teams are encouraged to raise money for a local charity of their choice
Inspired by the classic film, the the-day crusade will see over 100 of the finest British bangers visit some of Europe’s most exciting locations and experience spectacular roads with backdrops of sun, sea, sand and snow!
There are a series of prizes up for grabs including trophies for the best - and worst - dressed teams.
I am laying down the challenge to the good people of Ripley and Heanor to join me on
Europe’s ultimate banger rally adventure.
This is a brilliant opportunity to get your team into gear and experience some of the greatest roads in Europe in some of worst cars from Ripley!
