The day shift at Collaro, Langley Mill

editorial image

This is a picture of the staff at Collaro Ltd in Eastwood - a company established during World War Two to make ammunition boxes.

About 2,000 people would work the day shift and 4,000 on the night shift. The photo was submitted by Brian Fretwell, who lives in South Street, Eastwood.

It was taken in 1944 and belonged to his parents, who are pictured in the photo.

After the war, the firm became Vic Hallam, which made sheds and pre-fabricated buildings. Vic Hallam is now closed and the site is now occupied by Warburtons and Lidl.
