Captain Walter Pollard was in charge of the Home Guard’s No 5 Section based at Rogers Farm, near New Eastwood Cemetery.
He was perhaps better known in his other capacity as the ‘doctors man’.
Having been severely injured in the First World War, Walter Pollard eventually returned to civilian life working for the local doctors, originally with Dr Gillespie and later, Dr Fletcher, Dr Black and finally Dr Gladstone.
He assisted in many capacities and became indespensable, highly respected and a well loved figure in the community.
The function of Eastwood’s Home Guard’s was to guard places like factories, railways and canals.
