The Darley Park concert

The Darley Park Concert returns to Derby on Saturday, June 30, from 8pm.

Round off the weekend’s Olympic torch celebrations with the annual Darley Park Concert, in a superb setting, fabulous music and fantastic fireworks in the company of the region’s only professional orchestra, sinfonia ViVA.

Presented by Classic FM’s morning show host John Suchet and with an amazing firework finale, come along and be part of the 30,000-strong crowd, in the stunning natural amphitheatre that is Darley Park.

Classic FM presenter John Suchet said: “Everyone at Classic FM is delighted to team up with Derby LIVE once again to present the spectacular Darley Park Concert. It is a genuine privilege for me to host this acclaimed event and I look forward to a wonderful evening of classical favourites in a truly superb setting.”

This year, conductor James Holmes and sinfonia ViVA will be joined by the sensational vocalist Mary Carewe, whose versatility ranges from musical theatre and cabaret songs to contemporary music.

She has appeared with orchestras in the UK, Ireland, Spain, Germany, Czech Republic, the United States, Australia

and Scandinavia, and has performed under the baton of Sir Simon Rattle, Kurt Masur, John Rutter, Charles Hazlewood, Gareth Hudson and Nick Davies.

This year’s programme is all about celebrating - the theme takes in weddings, anniversaries, holidays, vocational and sporting successes, with toe-tapping pieces to get everyone in the mood.

Orchestrally, in the first half there’s Walton’s stirring Crown Imperial, used at several coronations including

that of Queen Elizabeth II, Mendelssohn’s ever-popular choice of brides (and grooms) the Wedding March, Wagner’s energetic dance theme from The Mastersingers of Nuremberg), Grieg’s much-loved, lyrical Wedding Day at Troldhaugen plus string maestro Mantovani’s Holiday for Strings and the infectiously bouncy rhythms of Gershwin’s Strike up the Band Overture.

Pre-concert entertainment is on from 7.20pm and entry to the Darley Park concert is free.

There is car parking at £5 at St. Benedict Catholic & Performing Arts College on Duffield Road and Derby Rugby Club.
