Three unique Italian gardens with a distinctly British influence will be the subject of the final Lunchtime Lecture in the series at Eastwood’s DH Lawrence Heritage Centre on Friday 12 October.

In the Three English Gardens in Italy lecture, Mr Alan Bowker will travel the length of Italy to discuss three gardens created by expatriates in the English style but adapted to a Mediterranean climate.

Amongst those discussed will include the Civic Garden in Taormina in Sicily, which was created before the First World War by Florence Trevelyan, which includes eclectic pavilions of far-eastern inspiration, the “beehives”, very peculiar for their architecture and variety of materials.

Mr Bowker will also discuss the Taranto Garden at Villa Taranto, Lake Maggiore, which was created by Neil McEacharn a Scottish Captain who wanted the garden to reflect British style to remind him of home.

The third garden is the Walton Garden in La Mortella, Ischia, which was created in 1951 by English composer William Walton and his Argentinean wife Susana.

Admission to the talk which starts at 11am costs £2.50, £2 for Broxtowe Leisure Card holders and £1.50 for DH Lawrence Annual Members.
