It’s hard to picture it in this photograph but this crater on the Ilkeston landscape became the iconic Stanton wagon roundabout, just north of the town centre.

Dave Gunn took the picture as the Chalons Way works were progressing in the 1990s.

It shows existing buildings such as the Mundy Arms pub on the right, which is now George’s Tradition, and Galtee House to the left.

The large building with the red flag flying on the left was the Rutland Hotel and later Crockers nightclub. It was later demolished to make way for an Aldi supermarket.
