The British National Party took two seats from Labour in Heanor in a dramatic Amber Valley Borough Counil election night last Thursday.
A delay in the arrival of postal votes meant results were still being declared at 2am but as the night progressed the BNP claimed two seats and went within one vote of a third.

Lewis Allsebrook, aged just 24, took the Heanor West seat from Celia Cox with 727 votes to 560.

Cliff Roper won Heanor East from Labour's Ken Armstrong, who finished third behind Conservative candidate Linda Edwards-Millsom.

In the Heanor and Loscoe ward Labour candidate Alan Longdon won by a single vote from BNP candidate Paul Snell - 513 to 512.

The Conservatives strengthened their grip on the council by successfully defending six seats and gaining the previously vacant Langley Mill and Aldercar ward.

Here Terry Thorpe (Con) polled 423 votes, ahead of Eileen Hamilton (Labour) 408 and Keith Charles Falconbridge (LibDem) 123.

Labour now have just 14 councillors to the Tories' 29., with the BNP
having two.

Today's Vote

Do you think there is room for development in our area, or do you agree with protesters that it's being turned into a "brick jungle"?
No more development, we're losing our beautiful countryside.
The protesters are overreacting
