Kimberley Cllr Richard Robinson has welcomed police figures showing the number of motorists caught speeding after a Community Speed Watch initiative.
A ground-breaking scheme was launched in February this year, with Kimberley being chosen to pilot a new project in the Broxtowe borough. Volunteers monitored the speed of vehicles in several well known speeding hotspots.

Figures show that between February and July on Eastwood Road in Kimberley, 1,950 vehicles were monitored and 146 letters were sent to drivers caught speeding.

On Greens Corner 374 vehicles were checked with 81 letters being sent by out to drivers, on Nottingham Road 376 vehicles were checked with eight letters issued to drivers, on Swingate 128 vehicles were checked and 14 letters were sent out and on Nine Corners 382 vehicles were checked and 14 letters sent out.

This has been done by trained volunteers wearing high visibility jackets monitoring the speed of traffic with new speed guns.

The initiative came about through joint work between the police, cllr Steve Brunt, cllr Richard Robinson and Broxtowe Borough Council, and supported by the MP for Broxtowe, Nick Palmer.

Cllr Robinson said: "It's all about road safety and making drivers aware that speeding can result in serious injury and ultimately fatalities.

"I'd like to pay tribute to those volunteers, in particular cllr Steve Brunt who has co-ordinated the scheme, volunteers Eileen Plumb and Jill Poizer, and also PCSO Peter Keeley who has worked tirelessly for the police."

As a result of the work Peter Keeley has undertaken on Community Speed Watch he received a commendation for being Project Leader.

Cllr Brunt said: "I believe there are several positive outcomes from the result. To capitalise on this we have recently recruited more volunteers, as we only have the manpower currently to monitor two sites, these being Eastwood Road and the newly adopted site of Nine Corners outside Kimberley Police station."

From September onwards the Community Speed Watch team in Kimberley are going to concentrate their efforts in the area of Greens Corner on Nottingham Road in Kimberley.
