KIND-HEARTED Selston footballers dug deep to raise £1,000 to help a young teammate take part in a fund-raiser for the hospital where he is receiving treatment for leukaemia.
Members of Selston FC raised the cash for 15-year-old Thomas Barnes at the club's 40th anniversary celebrations.

They sold match day and anniversary programmes and had a sports auction at their evening do – which was also attended by former Nottingham Forest players Kenny Burns and John McGovern, who encouraged punters to part with their cash.

Thomas, from South Normanton, has acute lymphoblastic leukaemia and hopes to use the money to race a buggy at the Weston-Super-Mare beach race to raise funds for Sheffield Children's Hospital.

Simon Shirley, under-15s manager, said: "Thomas played for Selston at under-13s and under-14s before being taken ill in 2007 and during this time proved himself to be a prolific goal-scorer, netting 36 goals in his first season.

"Very few games went by where Thomas failed to make someone smile, whether it be team-mates or supporters."

Thomas's mum Shelley said: "We are overwhelmed by everyone's generosity and support.

"Selston is a lovely club, a really good set-up and we are really grateful to all of them."

Do you think there is room for development in our area, or do you agree with protesters that it's being turned into a "brick jungle"?
No more development, we're losing our beautiful countryside.
The protesters are overreacting
