A funeral service has been held for a former Selston man who went missing while diving in Scotland. His body was finally recovered from the sea.
Relatives and close friends of 38-year-old Steven Ottewell attended the private service at Warrington Crematorium.

Steven, who grew up in Selston and was a former pupil of Matthew Holland School, went missing at sea when he failed to surface from a dive above the 40m deep Markgraf submarine in Scapa Flow off the Orkney Islands on April 5.

A massive search operation was carried out but his body was not found until the end of May when it was discovered in the area where he had been diving.

His mother Betty of Sperry Close, Selston, said: "It was a lovely service. The vicar said it was such a tragedy and it was."

A memorial service to celebrate Steven's life was held in April at a church in Cuddington, Cheshire - where he had recently made his home with wife Paula - with friends from all over the country gathering to
pay their respects.

Betty added: "It's a relief to me that they have found his body. It was as if a weight had been lifted because without a body there was no closure.

"It won't bring him back and it doesn't make it any easier but we can put an end to it now we know where he is. He is at peace now."

Steven, a chemical engineer, was a keen diver and had gone to Scotland for a dive with members from the diving club he belonged.

He also leaves his father Joe.

Today's Vote

Do you think there is room for development in our area, or do you agree with protesters that it's being turned into a "brick jungle"?
No more development, we're losing our beautiful countryside.
The protesters are overreacting
