Awsworth enjoyed their very first Christmas lights switch-on on Friday night which included a special visit from Santa Claus and Mrs Claus.

Boxtowe Borough Councillor Ken Rigby had the honour of lighting up the village and Awsworth Primary School sang Christmas carols to entertain the crowds.

Santa was based in the Youth Club where he was visited by plenty of children who came to tell him what they were hoping for this Christmas.

Cakes and refreshments were available throughout the evening and cllrs Graham and Jackie Spencer dressed up as elves and were on hand to help.

Awsworth Parish Chairman David Buxton was delighted that the event had been such a success and hoped it would become a tradition in the village.

He added: “This is the first Christmas tree illuminations that has been provided in the village and we will absolutely do it again.”

Cllr Rigby was asked to switch on the lights as a thank you for all the support he has provided for the parish council including grants from the county council and advice.

The Christmas tree has been provided by Trinity Farm in Cossall and electrics by Slaters in Langley Mill.
