Barbecue in aid of ex-service men

Sausages sizzled as 130 people attended a barbeque in Awsworth to mark the 60th anniversary of the Queen’s coronation.

The event last Sunday raised over £900 for the Ilkeston branch of the Royal British Legion.

Visitors were entertained in a marquee at the home of John and Jane Mortimer.

Retired pharmacist Mr Mortimer, 68, said: ”The legion helps ex-servicemen and women in all sorts of ways. Some cannot pay fuel bills or their council tax.”

“Some people think its all about the Second World War but it’s not.”

A singer provided a concert and there was also a bar and raffle.”
