Kind-hearted volunteers from Eastwood are set to embark on a 1,400 mile trip to Serbia to rebuild houses for women and children.

Project leader Craig Wells will take 15 volunteers aged 20 to 67 on the trip where they will rebuild houses for survivors of the sex-trafficking trade in the country.

Almost half the volunteers will be travelling from Eastwood including Adam Gall and his son Jordan, Ray Calder, Carl Richards, David Draper and Dean Barnes.

The week-long trip to Novi Sad was organised by the New Horizon Church in Eastwood - which all the volunteers are members of - with flights and accomodation organised by European trip company Mission Europe.

Craig, 33, of Underwood, said he was excited to be part of the life-changing trip as he believes they can make a real difference.

He told the Advertiser: “Serbia is the sex-trafficking capital of the western world and it is an issue which is overlooked in their society and is a taboo subject.

“After we heard about how these women and children were being exploited we knew we just needed to go out and make a difference.”

The leader explains the people who will benefit from the building include a four-year-old girl who had been exploited up to four times a day until she was rescued from the sex trade.

None of the men embarking on the journey have been to Serbia before, but they are all skilled workmen who will be able to construct sound homes for these women and children.

Craig added: “We have a real passion to help people and we want our actions to speak louder than our words.

“We want to give these survivors a future and an opportunity to have the lives they deserve to live.”

In the run up to the venture, the group have raised £5,000 for building materials for these homes.

The money will go towards a new roof, windows and doors, plumbing, electricity and general ground maintenance.

The group will set off for Serbia on Saturday, October 4. To donate to the group contact Craig Wells on 07984255768.

The New Horizon Church meets on a Sunday at Hall Park Academy (formerly Eastwood Comprehensive School) on Mansfield Road, Eastwood, from 11am. Visit www.newhorizonchurch.org.uk for more information.
