OVER £2,500 was handed out to community groups in Eastwood for the good work they have done in the area.

Town Mayor Cllr Ken Woodhead handed out community grant cheques to 20 organisations who the council considered had contributed to the local area.

“These people did a lot for the community and its good to have them recognised,” said Cllr Woodhead.

“With the recent cutbacks these groups suffer and its nice to be able top give them a helping hand.”

Cllr Woodhead said he particularly want to support young people with the cash handouts.

Groups awarded part of the £2,550 included:

Kimberley drama group the Nottingham West Music and Drama Society; the 3rd Eastwood St Mary’s Scout Group; Eastwood Art Club; the SAFE shop in Nottingham Road; Eastwood Town Cricket Club; St John’s Moorgreen Lodge Division; Eastwood Collieries’ Male Voice Choir; Eastwood Army Cadets; Eastwood Theatre Support Group; the youth fishing group CAST; Eastwood Volunteer Bureau; Eastwood Women’s Care Group; Eastwood St Mary’s Wives Group; Eastwood Historical Society; Broxtowe Women’s Project; St Mary’s Friendship Club; Eastwood and District Probus Club and the ladies probus club; Brookhill Leys Toddler Group and Citizens Advice Bureau.
