CCTV helps catch youths

A CCTV camera installed in West Hallam has helped catch youths responsible for several anti-social behaviour incidents in the last month.

The CCTV which is privately funded by West Hallam Parish Council served its purpose when local officer Pc Russ Crooks from the Ilkeston Rural Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team was asked to view it and was able to identify the offenders.

Among the incidents caught on camera was a car seen wheel spinning in a dangerous manner in West Hallam Community Centre car park. The driver was identified and issued with a section 59 warning.

A 14 year-old boy was caught on camera drinking alcohol on Beech Lane recreational park, officers responded immediately and seized the alcohol and the boys parents informed.

And when a fire was started in the same area in the early hours of an August morning two 14-year-old boys and a 14-year-old girl were identified.

All were visited at their home address and given a warning in relation to the dangers of starting fires and being out in the early hours of the morning.

Pc Crooks said: “This is a great example of partnership working. Through local knowledge of the area I was able to identify the offenders and take positive action.

“The local community are very happy that we are able to take action through using the equipment they have provided, it definitely helps in tackling anti-social behaviour.”

The chair of the parish council, Cllr Carol Hart said: “West Hallam parish council work closely with Heanorgate CCTV and Pc Russell Crooks of the Ilkeston Rural Safer Neighbourhood Team.

“Working as we do means we are able to achieve some of the recent outstanding results in tackling anti-social behaviour.”
