Eastwood Community Sports Centre has announced it will remain open for another 13 weeks after the council agreed to help out during its handover of the venue to Hall Park Academy.
Broxtowe Borough Council had announced that the handover of the sports facility to the Eastwood school would take place this week following the schools change to Academy status but many clubs were concerned that they would have nowhere to practise after the centre said it would have to close.
However, in order to assist the school and the local clubs during the transition period the council has now agreed to extend its notice for another 13 weeks until March 31.
Councillor Milan Radulovic, Leader of Broxtowe Borough Council, said that the council was very keen to support the local clubs and some had moved to other facilities.
He added: “It has become clear that the school and the clubs need a few more weeks to plan the future of the facility and we want to do all we can to help.
“We will continue to work with them and other users to find options at other leisure centres wherever necessary.
“The Academy has agreed to continue to provide community access to the sports facilities in the long term and we intend to keep the centre open for a further three months whilst they finalise a solution.”
The council’s cabinet decided that the change in the status of the school from Eastwood Comprehensive School to Hall Park Academy brought about the end of their Community Use Agreement and at a meeting in September the Cabinet decided to withdraw.
