Council set for freeze

NOTTINGHAMSHIRE County Council is reassuring residents that it is well prepared for the wintry weather conditions forecast for the rest of this month.

The council has the capacity to store 22,000 tonnes of salt, which is 12,000 tonnes more than the absolute minimum recommended by the Government, and enough for all but the most severe winters.

Cllr Richard Jackson, the council’s cabinet member for transport and highways, said: “We learned a lot from last winter’s prolonged bad weather.

“We began planning for this year almost immediately and we’ve added an extra 10km to the gritted network.”
