The rumour started when pupils from Markfield Junior School wrote a fictional letter to the local council about the park becoming a precinct as part of a writing exercise.

Since then. rumours have spread like ‘wild fire’ and Cllr Philip Owen contacted the Advertiser to put the record straight when he heard what the concerns going around the village.

“We need to stop these rumours,” he said. “It’s spreading like wild fire.”

“They (the pupils) have gone home and told their parents about this letter and it’s all fictional.”

He told the Advertiser there were no plans afoot to turn the park into a shopping centre
