AN ASTON Martin, a Porsche and paying off their parents’ mortgages are at the top of a young couple’s shopping list after they scooped £45m on the EuroMillions.
Cassey Carrington and Matt Topham, both 22, were handed a cheque for a whopping £45,160,170.50 on Thursday after they matched five numbers and the two Lucky Stars on Tuesday’s draw.
Cassey, a supervisor at Iceland in Eastwood, had only set up her online account last Friday.
She said: “I did have a feeling I was going to win. The store where I work had won an incentive for delivering excellent sales and we had been presented with £10,000 which was shared between staff.
“After that I just felt like it was my lucky day and decided to get a EuroMillions ticket.”
But Friday’s ticket wasn’t the winner and by Tuesday the couple, who are getting married in September, thought their luck had ran out when Matt’s computer and their washing machine broke within minutes of each other.
Matt, who works with his dad and brother as a painter, said: “We were looking at getting parts and how much they’d cost rather than getting someone to mend them.
“We have been working hard to save up for our wedding and mending the washing machine wasn’t in the budget. We were sat in bed when Cassey checked her ticket.”
Cassey continued: “The numbers were there, the same as ours and we kept checking them off one by one.
“It didn’t have the prize amounts up yet, but we knew it was £40m or so, we just kept checking.”
The winning numbers were 3, 15, 17, 28, 33 with lucky stars 2 and 4. The pair called a friend who also checked the numbers but they had to reassure him that it wasn’t some sort of joke.
Matt said: “He was reading them and we were going ‘got that, got that, yep got that’. He panicked and asked if we had the lucky stars as well – and we did.”
The couple plan to treat friends and family with the win. Cassey said: “We will be looking after the people close to us. It is amazing to be able to tell my mum and dad that I would pay off their mortgage.
“My dad is a big Porsche fan and when I was a little girl I always said to him that I would buy him one, one day. He will now get his dream car.”
Matt added: “We can help friends get a house, it is so difficult these days to get a deposit and mortgage so it’s great we can help them. Also dad can finally hang up his paint brushes and relax.”
The couple love the programme Grand Designs and would like to create their dream home. They have also watched Top Gear and identified a host of cars they would like to buy, with an Aston Martin top of Cassey’s wish list.
They also have plans to travel. Having not been on holiday for a couple of years, both are keen to see China and America and also go to Monaco for the Grand Prix.
