Benefit cheat claimed £9,000

A Nuthall woman received an eight week suspended sentence and was ordered to do 150 hours unpaid work after falsely claiming over £9,000 in benefit.

Trudi Anderson, failed to notify Broxtowe Borough Council that she had inherited a property and that she was in receipt of a rental income from that same property, which affected her entitlement to housing and council tax benefit totalling £9,026.67.

In mitigation Ms Anderson’s solicitor said she was struggling with debts and dealing with complicated family issues at the time and was remorseful for what she did.

The 42-year-old of Hazel Drive pleaded guilty to three dishonesty offences.

Sentencing her at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on Monday October 8, District Judge Pyle said he believed Ms Anderson had sought to disguise her dishonest behaviour but took into account her early guilty plea.

As well as the 150 hours community service and eight week jail term, which was suspended for 12 months, she was ordered to pay the council £810 in costs.
