Man attacked wife with potato masher over burnt dinner

A WOMAN suffered facial injuries when her husband hit her with a potato masher because she burned his dinner.

Michael Needham, of Langley Mill, was spared jail after pleading guilty to wounding his wife and causing actual bodily harm.

Needham and his wife were at their old home in Heanor, when the incident happened in February last year, Wolverhampton Crown Court heard.

Prosecutor John Straw told the court that the assault came 10 years after Needham cut her on the chest with a piece of glass during an argument.

The court heard that in that incident, Needham, who was drunk at the time, shattered a glass cabinet in what was described as a ‘reckless act’.

Mr Straw said 39-year-old Needham, now of Upper Dunstead Road, had enjoyed some ‘good times’ with his wife during their marriage but there had also been a number of ‘pretty bleak’ periods in the relationship.

He added that Needham’s wife was left with bruising and swelling to her face after he hit her with the utensil.

Needham was given a 12-month jail term suspended for two years for the offences.

Judge Jonathan Gosling also placed him on supervision for two years with a condition he attended a domestic violence programme. Needham was also ordered to pay £250 costs.

In mitigation, defending barrister Mark Achurch told the court that Needham now had a new partner in his life after accepting his former relationship had ‘reached a poor state’.

He said Needham had emotional problems at the time and that resulted in him drinking too much but he had now taken steps to change his lifestyle.

He said: “He has shown he has the ability to recognise what had gone wrong in his life and he has put his own plan into place.”
