Police stop 70 cars in a day

More than 70 drivers were stopped for offences including not wearing seatbelts and using mobile phones in one day in Ilkeston.

Officers joined customs and DVLA staff during the raod safety operation near the Gallows Inn Playing Fields in Nottingham Road last Wednesday.

Between 8am and 2pm fixed penalty notices and warnings were given to 47 people for not wearing seatbelts, seven drivers for using their mobile phones, 13 motorists for vehicle defects and three for not being in proper control of their car.

Eight drivers whose vehicles had serious defects were banned from public highways on the spot while police gave four others a delayed ban, giving them time to fix their cars.

One vehicle was seized as a result of two fixed penalty tickets from VOSA due to defective seating, which had not been rectified, and the owner was reported for driving licence offences.

Pc Simon Doar from Larklands and Gallows Safer Neighbourhood team said: “It still amazes me at how many people we found not wearing their seatbelts, such a simple precaution is the difference between life and death.”
