sick vandals have trashed graves in a Brinsley churchyard where members of DH Lawrence’s family and local people’s loved ones are buried.

About 30 headstones were pushed over and five were smashed in the attack, which took place between 8pm on Wednesday August 17 and 8am on Thursday August 18 at St James’ the Great Church, in Church Lane.

Angela Smith, 56, is a regular visitor to the graveyard.

She told the Advertiser: “I don’t know why someone would do this sort of thing and I don’t know how the family of someone whose grave has been trashed would react.

“I can’t imagine how it would feel.

“What struck me is that people buried there can’t defend themselves.

“There was one grave I saw for someone who died in 1932, people blame hardship for this sort of behaviour but people buried there would have known real hardship.

“It’s shocking. I’d hope that parents reading this will ask themselves where their children were when this happened.”
