Wife hid husband in loft while he was on run from prison

Howard Parkin, of Ilkeston, is on the run from Sudbury prison.

Howard Parkin, of Ilkeston, is on the run from Sudbury prison.

Police had to use CS spray to force an escaped Ilkeston prisoner out of his hiding place when he went on the run from jail.

Howard Parkin, 46, was sent to Sudbury prison in March 2011 for five years for a combination of drugs and firearms offences and possessing a bladed article in public.

But on June 25 this year he walked out of the open prison. He was found in the loft of his Third Avenue home six days later.

At Derby Crown Court on Thursday he was jailed for an additional six months for escaping prison.

His wife, Lindsay Parkin, 38, also appeared charged with drugs offences and harbouring an offender.

When police arrived to search the house, she had told officers that he was not there.

After finding him hiding under insulation in the loft a search of the property uncovered amphetamines and the drug MCAT in hollowed out books and bagged up. Digital scales were also found.

The court heard that Mrs Parkin had asked her husband to come home because she was being threatened.

As a result of the crimes, Mrs Parkin’s three children have been taken into care.

Defending Mrs Parkin, William Bennett, said: “Mrs Parkin became involved in this through naivety and exploitation, she was under pressure to repay a debt.

“Her three children have been taken off her, nothing more devastating can happen to a mother than that.”

She was given a nine month prison sentence suspended for a year.
