£10,000 for ‘Erewash Valley towns’

Eastwood and Kimberley have been awarded Government cash to improve footfall into the towns.

A total of £10,000 has been given to Broxtowe Borough Council to spend on improving Eastwood, Kimberley, and Stapleford – dubbed the ‘Erewash Valley towns’.

The cash is part of the Mary Portas Town Team Partners scheme – a project launched earlier this year to pump cash into dying town centres laced with empty shops.

Across the country, 300 towns are part of the Town Team Partners scheme.

Each town team partner will have an advice line and a network of advisers managed by the Association of Town Centre Management, special national events to learn from other town teams, industry expert advice, meetings with other town teams to share tips and ideas, and ’Crowdfunding’ – a potential way to attract local investors and raise small amounts of finance to support their work.

All Town Team Partners will also benefit from a Government-sponsored fund designed to help towards getting their plans off the ground.

A Broxtowe Borough Council spokesman said: “It has not yet been decided how this money will be spent, although it will form part of the wider improvements planned in the town centres of Eastwood, Kimberley and Stapleford.”

And Broxtowe MP Anna Soubry added: “I look forward to seeing the impact that the package of support they will now receive, including support from leading retail experts. I am keen to see thriving high streets and town centres, where businesses have the right support and can flourish.”

Back in April when the project launched, the three towns submitted a joint bid to win one of 12 top £100,000 prizes.

Councillors said they would have spent the cash on promoting the Erewash Valley Trail and connecting the walk to the towns and their historical attractions, such as the DH Lawrence Heritage Centre.
