A day of celebrations in Kimberley
NEAA 06-10-12 BE 6 Kimberley book read competition. Childrens parade.
It was a day of celebrations in Kimberley last Saturday for the finale of the town’s book reading competition and the farmers’ market’s third anniversary.
Broxtowe MP Anna Soubry announced the winner of the Great Kimberley Book Read and children dressed as their favourite book characters to put colour into the day.
Competition organiser Gloria Morgan said: “I applaud all the writers who submitted their work to the competition and turned up in force on the day to give support and take part.
“Our MP, Anna Soubry, was very complimentary about all the work.
“The children in fancy dress were wonderfully original, too. There were lovely creations and it was great to see them brought to life.”
First place was awarded to Alan Dance for his historical novel set in Nottingham, Leen Times.
Second place was awarded to Michael Oren for Dudlham Sings and third place to Philip Baker for his book, Needle on Red.
The Great Kimberley Book Read involved several local authors submitting books for the public to read and vote on their favourite.
Author Gloria Morgan, of Victoria Street, launched the Great Kimberley Book Read after she won the Great Caunton Book Read last year.
She said it would be great if Mr Dance launched a competition in Beeston, where he lives, next year.
The Kimberley Farmers’ market marked its third anniversary the same morning, forming part of the celebrations on the day.
Broxtowe Mayor Margaret Handley paid the stalls a visit, shoppers were serenaded by a brass band and there were several new stalls for selling different foods and crafts.
