The future of a Cotmanhay nursery still hangs in the balance despite the council stepping in to keep it open from another two months.

The Pre-School Learning Alliance (PLA) run facility, based at the Sure Start centre in Cotmanhay was set to close on October 31 but Derbyshire County Council have agreed to fund the nursery until December 31.

Elizabeth Law’s daughter goes to the nursery. She said: “I’m pleased it will be staying open longer but it still leaves us with the same problem when it does close.

“As parents we need definite answers and this doesn’t feel like one.

“People are taking their children out of the nursery but will leave them here if the future is a bit more certain.

“Cotmanhay is taking a hell of a kicking and no one seems to be doing anything.

“We won’t stop fighting to keep it open, it’s a valuable community asset and parents need it.”

The PLA say that there are not enough children using the nursery to keep it open.

A spokesman for Derbyshire County Council confirmed the nursery will now be open until December 31. She added: “It won’t stay open after this date as there are not enough children using the nursery for it to break even.

“The county council is providing the funding to allow the nursery to stay open, but we cannot do this indefinitely.

“We’re still looking at helping local parents find alternative provision if they need it and if we’re successful we’ll let them know as soon as possible.”

Sue Swift-Jackson, county manager for the PSLA, said: “We want to reassure parents and staff that we are still working to find a solution and continue providing childcare in the Cotmanhay area after December 31.

“We are currently looking at alternative locations and will be keeping parents informed of any developments, we hope to meet with parents in November with options.”
