Axe over county NHS jobs

THOUSANDS of local jobs could be at risk after the Government announced plans for an NHS shake-up last week.

The plans would see Primary Care Trusts and Strategic Health Authorities - the organisations which manage local healthcare - abolished.

Instead, groups of GPs would make decisions about which services should be provided.

Locally that would mean organisations like NHS Nottinghamshire County and the East Midlands Strategic Health Authority - which employ thousands of people and manage budgets of billions of pounds - were up for the chop.

The plans to 'phase out' the organisations means staff in managerial, administrative and financial roles could lose their jobs.

News of the revamp came in the form of a white paper issued by the Health Secretary Andrew Lansley, who said the NHS was the coalition Government's priority.

A statement for East Midlands Strategic Health Authority said their organisation would continue to have a 'vital role' until it was phased out.

"As we work towards definitive plans, the NHS in the East Midlands will continue to stay committed to delivering high quality healthcare for all of our patients in the region," it reads.

Unison, the trade union which represents many of the affected staff said the changes could lead to 'chaos' but the British Medical Association said the doctors were 'ideally placed' to identify the health needs of their local population.

Mr Lansley said: "The Government's ambition is for health outcomes - and quality services - that are among the best in the world. We have in our sights a unique combination of equity and excellence.

"With patients empowered to share in decisions about their care, with professionals free to tailor services around their patients and with a relentless focus on continuously improving results, I am confident that together we can deliver the efficiency and the improvement in quality that is required to make the NHS a truly world class service."
