BBC to film new Lawrence dramas

DH Lawrence enthusiasts are hoping a new adaptation of one of his classic works will be filmed around Eastwood.

The Eastwood-born author's novel Women In Love will be adapted as part of a series of television dramas about love and sexuality in 20th century literature.

Lawrence enthusiasts hope it will be filmed locally, where he set many of his novels.

Sean Matthews, director of the Lawrence Research Centre at the University of Nottingham said: "I think it would be wonderful to film it locally. There would maybe be some issues about finding a working pit but much of the countryside and the miners' properties would certainly be available.

"One scene in the book takes place at Moorgreen Reservoir and it is still exactly how it looked when he wrote the novel in 1916, so that's perfect."

Women In Love includes scenes in London and in the Alps, as well as scenes set in and around Eastwood.

He said: "There is a scene where someone freezes to death in the snow in the Alps so I would imagine they would have to go somewhere snowy for that. Maybe they would do some filming in Scotland, or they might go to the Alps itself, who knows."

Women In Love will be combined with Lawrence's The Rainbow, for the adaptation, to be screened on BBC Four in late 2010. Filming begins in May.

BBC Four controller Richard Klein said he was keen to open up the channel to modern interpretations of literary classics and hoped actors of a high calibre would be secured to star. He said locations for the dramas had yet to be chosen.

Women In Love was originally published in 1921 and was a sequel to The Rainbow, although Lawrence had intended to combine them in one novel called The Sisters. It tells the story of the life and loves of the Brangwen sisters.

Mr Klein said: "Modern adaptations are a new direction for drama on the channel and I'm delighted to bring alive for viewers these iconic, but sometimes overlooked, classic novels.

"The 20th century has seen an enormous change in the way that men and women behave towards each other and how they conduct relationships between each other. This season aims to explore and contextualise those changes."

The lives of the Brangwen sisters and their lovers were brought to the big screen in 1969 by director Ken Russell. The film starred Oliver Reed and Alan Bates, with Glenda Jackson winning a best actress Oscar for her role.

DH Lawrence was born on Victoria Street, Eastwood in 1885 and died in France in 1930 aged 44.
