A Kimberley-born woman has celebrated a milestone birthday this week after reaching the remarkable age of 105.

Beatrice Harvey, who was born in 1907 in the town, spent the vast majority of her life living there.

After leaving school, she was employed at a leather works in Giltbrook and her last place of employment was Blanchards Bakery in Watnall.

Her husband, Sam, who was a miner at Moorgreen Colliery for many years, died in the early 1980s.

Beatrice has two daughters, Maureen Webster and Edith Turner, and a son, Albert Harvey, who are all in their seventies.

Maureen is a resident of Nuthall while Edith and Albert both live in Hucknall.

She also has five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

At the age of 93 Beatrice moved to Annesley Lodge Care Home in Hucknall before transferring to Hallcroft Care Home where she lives now.

Family and friends joined staff at the home to throw Beatrice a special birthday party.

Entertainment was provided by popular country music duo Jane and Greg and buffet refreshments included a gorgeous birthday cake.

Daughter Edith later said: “My mum thoroughly enjoyed the party and it was certainly a day to remember.”

To put her amazing longevity into context, 1907 was also the year when Sir Robert Baden-Powell founded the Boy Scouts in England and the priceless Cullinan Diamond was presented to King Edward VII on his birthday.

Many cards received by Beatrice include one from the Queen and one sent by Work and Pensions Secretary Iain Duncan Smith.

One little secret revealed at her party is that Beatrice likes the occasional glass of sherry.
