Keen fundraisers have paid for one of Benidorm’s most popular entertainers to appear at a charity event in Brinsley this weekend.

Brendan Murray will provide the entertainment this Saturday and Sunday at the Durham Ox, to help raise money for Macmillan Cancer Research.

The event has been organised by a group of people in the village - who have raised more than £30,000 for cancer charities over the last six years.

The group, mainly women, have holidayed in Benidorm together for over ten years and, being Brendan’s biggest fans, are paying his flight so he can sing at the event.

Fundraiser Debbie Graham said: “He is absolutely fab. We’ve got to know him really well and he’s a friend of ours now really.

“We were out there last year celebrating a 50th and he was telling us how he doesn’t work for the whole month of January, so one of the ladies asked if he would come over and sing, and then I suggested we turn it into a charity night.”

Brendan Murray sings in Benidorm’s Irish Bar, Bodhran.

As well as the popular singer, there will be a bouncy castle, food, a raffle, tombola, cake stall and games.

Debbie said: “It should be great, fingers crossed. I would love to say it would be great to raise a couple of thousand but we are relying solely on donations so we’ll have to see.”

The group have hosted many fundraising events over the last six years, mainly at pubs in Brinsley. Two years ago they hosted a big charity event at the village’s Allandale Farm, which raised £16,000.

“Macmillan is close to all of our hearts because we have all lost family to cancer,” added Debbie.

The fundraisers are Michelle Bingham, Elisha Nicholas, Denise Banks, Susan Smith, John Reilly and Mark Dodds.

John Reilly has recently taken on the Durham Ox in Brinsley,
