The total raised by a boxing event in aid of the hospital ward where an Ilkeston two-year-old is being treated has reached £5,000.

Brave Abbey Fenton’s mum Julie Stayner said she was ‘shocked’ by the amount the 24-hour ‘OzBoxathon’ at Heanor Gate school last month raised.

“That is a fantastic amount – I’m so shocked,” she said.

“It means we can buy a special bath for the ward which will make the lives of the kids so much better.”

Abbey is suffering from a brain tumour.

Julie set up the Saving Abbey Fund to generate money to support the paediatric ward at Queen’s Medical Centre

The idea for the marathon event came from pupils and staff at the school when they heard about Abbey’s plight.

Hundreds of pupils, parents, teachers and police officers took part in the event.

OzBox is a non-contact boxing-based fitness scheme run by Derbyshire police.

OzBox founder Steve Osbaldeston MBE said: “It was a truly brilliant effort from the pupils and everyone involved. Let’s hope it makes life a little easier for Abbey.”
