Brinsley dogs scoop two firsts at Crufts

Two dogs in Brinsley scooped firsts at Crufts last week and the owners said they were ‘over the moon’.

Sharon Oakey and Denise Garrett, who run the Bed and Biscuit Hotel in Mansfield Road, showed their Saluki dogs Cally and Maddison, and won Best Bitch and Best Veteran.

Eight year old Maddison beat off stiff competition from 84 other female Salukis in the prestigous national awards, and Cally, aged seven, won Best Veteran, otherwise known as ‘older dog’.

Denise said they won because they had the ‘x-factor’.

“Right from being a baby Maddison has just had something about her,” she said. She has always just had that x-factor.

“She’s very different – very glamorous. And an amazing achievement for her because at eight months old she was hit by a car and we were told she wouldn’t survive.”

The judges make their decision based on how accurately the dogs represent their breeds, regards both looks and behaviour.

“With Maddison it’s her movement,” said Denise.

“She moves like a dream and she stood out.”

The ladies, who travel the country showing the two dogs, go to Crufts every year, but have never achieved the successes they did last week.

“We were over the moon,” said Sharon.

“We were told there was a lot of competition this year and we honestly didn’t expect anything.

“We went to enjoy the day!”

The next competition for the dogs is The Birmingham National Show in May.

“We’ll come down off cloud nine and see what happens!” said Sharon.

Crufts was held last Thursday. More than 25,000 dogs were shown over the four day event and Jilly, a Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen, was crowned 2013 Crufts champion.

The Bed and Biscuit pet Hotel offers boarding and training for dogs.
