Eastwood MP Gloria De Piero visited the town’s Citizen’s Advice Bureau to find out why there had been a surge in calls for help and advice.

Throughout last year the office had 16,000 unanswered phone calls and had to turn away 1,000 people at the door - and with welfare reform around the corner the situation is set to get worse, the bureau manager told Ms De Piero.

“This is a huge concern,” she the MP.

“A very real crisis is looming with welfare reforms now just around the corner.

“Staff and volunteers do a fantastic job and they are working flat out but my worry is that demand will increase significantly once the reforms kick in.

The Ashfield and Eastwood MP has now written to the welfare reform minister on behalf of the bureau to raise the concerns and ask what support will be on offer to people and who will be providing it.

“The Government must do more to get the information out about Universal Credit and help our voluntary organisations over the next couple of weeks before it is too late,” said the MP.

It is essential that we work together to support the most vulnerable people in our community.”

Sue Malowska said the number of people referred for food parcels had increased ‘significantly’ and Ms De Piero put this down to ‘failures’ in the benefit system.

Ms Maslowska said: “We really appreciate our local MP supporting us by writing to Lord Freud and asking him to ensure that new framework is set up in a way to make sure voluntary organisations are at the centre of delivering this support and are given the resources they need.”
