By-pass closed over fears for woman

POLICE closed off a stretch of the A61 by-pass after a woman was spotted sitting dangerously on the outer side of a bridge barrier.

The woman was discovered with her legs dangling down over a 50ft drop from the bridge, near Chesterfield Hotel and the town centre, about 1.30pm, on Wednesday.

A Derbyshire Constabulary spokesman said: "We closed off the A61 in both directions from Horns Bridge to Hollis Lane as a precaution and officers were sent to speak to the woman."

Police also patrolled a nearby walkway over the A61 to help monitor the situation and to prevent any crowds gathering.

The woman was safely detained by officers under the Mental Health Act by about 2.10pm and taken to Chesterfield Royal Hospital to be assessed and the roads were re-opened shortly afterwards.
