A group of people working on making the world a more compassionate place are hoping to start workshops in local schools teaching children about kindness.

Jeff Buck from Nuthall is a member of the group ‘In Kind’ which aims to teach people the importance of compassion and empathy and influence public and social policy.

Made up of seven people including Mr Buck and two people from Awsworth, In Kind has collected over 300 signatures to get Nottingham declared a ‘city of compassion’ - an internationally recognised title – and say their next aim is to break into schools and teach kids the importance of being nice.

Mr Buck said: “We thought it would be a good idea because kids get it on a very basic level.

“You don’t need to explain it in a complex way. They know that you should be nice to each other and they would rather people be nice to them, than not.”

The group set up 18 months ago when they all agreed they were not making enough of a difference to people’s lives.

“We had all worked in different areas where we were supposed to be helping people, but all felt that for the effort we were putting in, we were not seeing huge amounts of results,” said Mr Buck.

“We all sat round and agreed that often in public policy the element missing is compassion, and it all went from there.”

The group was in Nottingham city centre last weekend giving away free cakes, biscuits – and even hugs.

“We want to try to make public policy stand up to the government and say there’s more to life than growth and economics. Happiness doesn’t come from having a lot of money.”
