Concern for housing plan

A LANGLEY Mill councillor has revealed his concerns over a housing development on the town’s greenbelt land.

Cllr Kevin Parkinson said it would be a ‘great shame’ for the land to be taken away between Langley Mill and Heanor, before empty houses and brownfield sites were made use of.

“Once these two options are exhausted I might be a bit more open minded about moving into the greenebelt. Once it’s gone it’s gone,” he said.

The Strategic Housing Land Availability Assesment (SHLAA) has designated land surrounding several Amber valley towns as potential building grounds for thousands of new homes – almost all on greenbelt land.

Last month Amber Valley Borough Council considered a report based on feedback from 11 drop-in consultation events held around the borough, at which the public give their views about the 14 proposed sites.

Campaigners protesting at Ripley Town Hall pleaded with councillors to give a vote of no confidence to the plan.

Cllr Stephen Hayes said the move towards delivering a 15-year supply of homes in Amber valley was no easy one.

“The council has got to ensure that the amount of new housing can be provided to meet the borough’s current and future housing needs,” he said.
