Controversial Kimberley taxi rank plan turned down
CONTROVERSIAL plans to install a taxi rank in a narrow Kimberley road have been scrapped.
Broxtowe Borough Borough Council applied to install the taxi rank in Station Street - a tight road already congested with cars that struggle to turn around.
Residents in nearby Chapel Street and The Sidings said the taxi rank would attract rowdy pub goers, bringing anti-social behaviour back to the area and push drivers who currently park on the road to park directly outside their homes causing traffic chaos.
They also said the road was unsuitable for large volumes of traffic because of the access from Main Street and pointed out the proposed rank was in a conservation area, which has barely changed for over 100 years.
And on Monday the planning application was refused by councillors who backed the residents concerns in a licensing and appeals committee meeting.
Residents had submitted a petition with 120 signatures on during the public consultation in May.
And Peter Dennis of Chapel Street said: "I am delighted that common sense has prevailed and the committee has listened. It is was ludicrous location and the objections were overwhelming."
Kimberley town councillors also strongly opposed the plans.
Cllr Mel Crow said: "This is a real result and it's great the voice of elected members and residents has been heard and triumphed."
The council proposed the idea last autumn after the town's Sainsbury's supermarket put a stop to cabs using its car park.
