Council may contract out leisure sites
Council chiefs have refused to rule out that they are looking to outsource the running of two leisure centres after fears were raised by union bosses.
A spokesman for Chesterfield Borough Council said that while there were no firm plans to contract out Staveley Healthy Living Centre and Queen's Park Sports Centre, they had opened up "very informal discussions" with relevant parties.
The admission comes after UNISON said the council intended to outsource the running of the facilities and had issued a 'Prior Information Notice', which relates to an intention to offer a contract for services.
A council spokesman said: "All councils have a duty to test their services against the market to understand whether a better deal can be had for residents by considering alternative ways of managing their services. The council has opened up very informal discussions with a number of players in this market."
Opposition leader Cllr John Burrows said he understood it was a long-term aim to outsource the entire leisure portfolio, which could affect the Pomegranate, Winding Wheel and the Museum. But council leader Cllr Ray Russell said there were no plans to outsource these venues.
