Crimefighters to lose PCSO

COUNCIL bosses are slashing their annual funding for a police PCSO in Clowne after they claim Derbyshire Constabulary did not match their support.

Clowne Parish Council has announced it will stop paying 50,000 a year for two PCSOs and instead will fund just one after claiming Derbyshire police did not keep its side of the bargain and failed to invest in increasing PCSOs on the Clowne Safer Neighbourhood Team.

Speaking at a parish council meeting, chairman Karl Reid said: "There was a massive fear of crime and we felt if one person felt safer it was worth spending the money.

"When we said we'd pay for two PCSOs the police said they would also pay for two but this wasn't forthcoming. We've had to look at finances and felt this has been all take and no give but we will keep paying for one PCSO."

Insp Ian Palfreyman said: "We aspired to raise the number of PCSOs to four but we've not had the resources."

Derbyshire Constabulary said Clowne's SNT has two sergeants covering Bolsover District and Clowne, two Pcs, one police-funded PCSO and two parish council-funded PCSOs - one of which will be lost in July.

A meeting between the parish council and police to discuss the matter is planned for April.

Clowne's parish council is believed to be the only one in the county to fund a PCSO.
