A Selston couple have celebrated 60 years of marriage with a party at the same special venue where they met and had their wedding reception.

Howard and Catherine Jepson, of Grundy Avenue, met at a benefit dance being held for an injured amateur footballer at Selston Miners’ Welfare, now the Parish Hall, 64 years ago.

They were married at St Helen’s Church at Selston on 2nd August 1952 and had a reception at the Parish Hall before honeymooning in Skegness.

The couple have five children, Michael, Susan, Joy, Jennifer and Helen, nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Catherine, 80, worked as a machinist at the Viyella factory and later at Selston Leisure Centre for 12 years.

Howard, 83, worked driving tractors for the ‘War Ag’, at Underwood, and then moved to Pye Hill Colliery, where he worked for 31 years.

The couple love animals, especially the family dogs, budgerigars and canaries and Howard enjoys pigeon racing.

They celebrated their Diamond wedding anniversary with a party for 70 guests at the Parish Hall.

As the couple have both had cancer, donations for a cancer charity were given instead of presents.
