A couple from Brinsley
who were celebrating their Diamond wedding anniversary met the Queen on her jubilee tour.

Peggy and Philip Hill received an exclusive invitation to meet the Queen and Prince Philip as she came to Nottingham on her jubilee tour, and the couple described it as ‘quite a thrill’.

Peggy said: “I thought I would be a bag of nerves but it really was quite a thrill. She was very gracious.

“She shook hands with us and she asked when our anniversary was. She said ‘not long, not long’ and left a real glow behind. To speak directly to you and look you in the eye was amazing. A once in a life time thing.”

The Hills were ushered into a city centre hall along with 15 other couples, where they also met Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge.

Peggy said William was ‘charismatic’ and Kate was ‘chatty’.

The Royals went out on to a balcony where the national anthem was played and crowds outside cheered.

“It was rather wonderful,” said Peggy.

The couple, who have lived in Plainspot Road for 52 years, applied to meet the Queen after seeing a notice asking for couples who were marking 60 years marriage this year.

Philip and Peggy marked their diamond wedding anniversary on July 5 and as well as a visit from Broxtowe Mayor Margeret Handley, they celebrated with a tea party for 30 family and friends.
