Dog order consultation

People are being given the chance to have their say on the introduction of a dog control order which would see new rules for pet owners.

The order would see dogs banned from specific areas, designate other sites where owners must keep their dogs on a lead at all times and increase the fixed penalty for owners who are caught failing to scoop the poop.

Erewash Borough Council has launched a six-week public consultation this week to ask residents what they think about the proposals and to offer them the chance to suggest designated areas and sites.

Erewash Borough Council’s lead member for the environment, Cllr Barbara Harrison, said: “We know this is an important topic for many people and it is vital that we get as much feedback as possible from residents, whether they are dog owners or not.

“The introduction of a dog control order is really about encouraging people to be responsible about looking after their dog in public and the new powers would be an important move in our continued drive to tackle the problem of dog mess on our streets and in our parks and to crack down on those irresponsible owners who fail to properly control their dogs.

“We want them to tell us what they think about our proposals .”

The order would also include banning dogs from fenced and gated children’s play areas and multi-use sports areas and making it law that dogs must be on a lead in any public cemeteries in the borough.

Cllr Harrison added: “We want to know if the designated sites are appropriate?

“Are there alternative sites that we should consider?”

Residents can give their views on-line at www.erewash.gov.uk.

They can also view maps and details of the specific areas where it is proposed the measures will be introduced. Details of the proposals and a questionnaire can also be picked up from Ilkeston and Long Eaton Town Halls.

Views must be submitted by 5pm on Monday 13 August.
