Driving dangers off road

POLICE have been carrying out random vehicle checks in a bid to drive dangerous vehicles off the county's roads.

Checks were carried out by officers on the A61 around the Wingerworth area with customs and excise and Trading Standards staff also present at the operation to give advice and assistance to motorists.

In total, 119 vehicles were stopped and a number of safety checks carried out during the event last Thursday.

During the course of the operation, which involved newly appointed constables, two vehicles were seized for having no insurance and six were issued with vehicle defect rectification notices which gives the vehicle owner 14 days to repair any faults.

A further two vehicles were issued with prohibition notices for having defects, which gives the vehicle owner one hour to remove the vehicle from the road after which time it must be immediately repaired and given an MOT test.

Six fixed penalty fines were issued including two for driving without insurance, one for driving without an MOT and a further two for having illegal number plates.

Sgt John Chapman, of Derbyshire Constabulary's professional development unit said: "This operation not only provided the opportunity for student officers to gain useful experience but it also played an important part in ensuring that Derbyshire's roads are even safer for the majority of law abiding motorists."

Student Constable Darren Holden said: "This was a really successful operation both in taking action against those motorists who were found to be breaking the law and in promoting the importance of road safety in Chesterfield and throughout Derbyshire.

"People who drive unfit vehicles are not only endangering their own lives but also the lives of other road users and pedestrians.

"We want motorists to know that if they drive illegally on our roads it is only a matter of time before they are caught."
