DVD shop is saved from axe
Staff at an Eastwood DVD rental store are celebrating keeping their jobs this week — despite the firm having gone into administration.
Blockbuster, which has a shop in South Street, has 528 stores across the UK and employs 4,190 staff.
The tough economic climate forced the firm to call in administrators Deloitte last week and on Saturday it announced that 129 stores will close.
But many stores in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire, including Ilkeston and Long Eaton, have been spared the chop for the time being.
Lee Manning, joint administrator and partner at Deloitte, said: “In recent years Blockbuster has faced increased competition from internet-based providers along with the shift to digital streaming of movies and games.”
“During this time gift cards and credit acquired through Blockbuster’s trade-in scheme will be honoured towards the purchase of goods,” he added.
But the stores are still not permanently safe as Deloitte says it will continue to ‘review the profitability of the store portfolio’.
“Announcements of further closures may be made in coming weeks,” a spokesman said.
Staff at the store had been told not to speak to the press when the Advertiser approached them last week.
